The next time you reach for a snack, think about this – numerous scientific studies have suggested (but do not prove) that eating a handful of pistachios a day may help lower your risk of heart disease. That's because pistachios are high in both monounsaturated fat (the "good" fat) and a nonessential amino acid called Arginine that helps keep your arteries strong and flexible.

Of the three types of dietary fat – saturated, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated – only monounsaturated fat lowers LDL or "bad" cholesterol while maintaining HDL or "good" cholesterol. Pistachios contain a scant 1.5 grams of saturated fat while providing abundant heart-healthy, monounsaturated fat and no cholesterol!
